Street Photography Workshop With Valérie Jardin

This past weekend I was lucky enough to take one of Valérie Jardin’s weekend street photography workshops in my hometown of Vancouver, Canada. What an amazing couple of days! On Saturday morning we started with group introductions and Valérie’s presentation and then hit the streets. Our group of ten came from as far away as Germany, and it didn’t take long for friendships to develop. We were also fortunate to have Ian MacDonald with us as our local guide. Ian led us to some great locations in the city, including Robson Square, the Granville Strip, Coal Harbour and China Town. Between Valérie and Ian, we learned all kinds of techniques for approaching street photography.

The highlight of the workshop for me was learning how to approach strangers to ask for street portraits. This was way outside my comfort zone! However, with practice it became much easier and was actually very exhilarating! We also learned ways to become invisible on the streets, allowing us to capture images of people without them knowing.

I’m now addicted to street photography! Here is my collection of images from the weekend.
